HOELT vs IELTS: what the new Home Office test means for your visa
The Home Office is replacing the SELT system with one standardised test, the HOELT, launching December 2026. What it means if you planned to take IELTS.
What is happening
The Home Office ran a tender for a single standardised English test for immigration, expected live in December 2026, replacing the current SELT system (IELTS for UKVI, LanguageCert, Skills for English).
IELTS withdrew from the tender in 2026, saying fully remote testing could not meet its security requirements. That signals tightly controlled test centres rather than a test you sit from your living room.
Does your existing IELTS result still count?
Yes. An existing IELTS for UKVI result still counts for applications made under the current rules. The English requirement is assessed at the point you apply, not the point you sat the test.
Work backwards from your application date
The right move depends on when you plan to submit your visa application:

Applying in the next few months: book an approved SELT now. Do not wait for the HOELT.
Applying after the HOELT launches: watch the official announcements and join the waitlist so you hear the confirmed details first.
A warning on "HOELT sample papers"
The HOELT format is unpublished. Anyone selling HOELT sample papers today is guessing. Save your money and your trust for materials that come after the format is confirmed.
The level is fixed, whoever runs the test
The Skilled Worker English requirement is now B2, and B2 is B2 whoever marks the test. The English you build today transfers to whatever test you sit tomorrow.
